Let’s just say it out loud: this work is hard.

Not “busy” hard. Not “I skipped lunch again” hard. The kind of hard that stays in your body. The kind that keeps you up at night wondering if you did enough. The kind that makes you question if you can keep showing up the same way, day after day.

If you work or volunteer in the nonprofit world, you already know. The burnout is real. The uncertainty is real. Resources are tight. People are stretched. Expectations are high. And still—we keep going.

Not because it’s easy. But because we believe in something bigger than the spreadsheets and the staff meetings and the grant deadlines.

We believe in the mission. And for many of us, that mission has become a kind of sacred promise.

To show up. To care. To fight for something that matters.

But even sacred work can wear you down. Especially when the days are long and the wins feel few and far between. Especially when good people leave. When volunteers stop calling back. When your best team member is hanging on by a thread. Especially when you’re the one hanging on by a thread.

And that’s when the small moments start to matter the most.

The unexpected thank-you note in your inbox that made you cry a little.

The volunteer who dropped by just to check in—and stayed to help with a small task

The donor who gave again, even though you forgot to send that update. The moment a rescued animal takes its first deep breath in your care. Or a young visitor leaves with eyes wide open and a brand-new understanding of the world.

These moments are quiet. Easy to miss. But they are the proof. The purpose. The heartbeat of this work.

Joy doesn’t always show up in fireworks. Sometimes it looks like breathing room. Sometimes it’s just someone remembering your name. Sometimes it’s being told, “You made a difference”—even if just for one person, one animal, one hour.

So if you’re in it right now—tired, unsure, maybe even a little lost—this is for you.

You are not failing. You are doing something hard. Something real. And there is still joy here. You might just need to slow down enough to notice it.

Because yes, the work is hard. But the mission is sacred. And the joy? It’s still here. Hiding in plain sight.

Find it. Hold it. Let it carry you forward.
