The True Cost of Compassion: Why Education and Funding Go Hand in Hand

It’s time we all recognize the true cost of compassion and make it a priority.
Animal welfare is about saving lives, yes. But it’s also about teaching. You can’t just focus on the immediate need, rescuing one animal at a time, and ignore the bigger picture. Without education, the cycle of overcrowded shelters, underfunded rescues, and burnout will never end.
People need to understand the why behind what you do. Why spay/neuter matters. Why fostering is critical. Why rescues struggle to stay afloat. Why animals end up in shelters in the first place. If you don’t make education a priority, you'll keep fighting the same fires over and over again.
But education alone isn’t enough. You need to back it up with funding because compassion costs money. It costs money to care for animals, to provide vet care, to run programs, and to educate the public. It takes real resources to make a real difference.
That’s where grants can come in. Building a sustainable funding strategy for your organization means including education programs and pursuing grants to support them. The good news? There are grants out there designed specifically to fund animal welfare education, grants that can help you teach your community, grow your programs, and expand your impact.
Let’s start seeing the true cost of compassion and make it a priority.
